Dubai was an unlikely tourist destination just a couple of decades ago, yet today boasts a superb tourist infrastructure, with quality roads, hotels, shops and restaurants. There are numerous key landmarks in Dubai, such as the new seven-star Burj al-Arab Hotel with its ship's sail exterior and opulent interior. It resides on the coast near to the Palm Islands along Jumeirah Road. You can take your Dubai hire car along this road as well as drive onto the Palm Islands.

There are also several world class cultural attractions in Dubai, such as the Dubai Zoo and the Dubai Museum; the latter of which showcases the rise of the rich emirate. Also of note for cultural types is the Bastakiya district, which is the old part of town where there are many ancient buildings and markets.

Most of the action happens around the beaches where all types of water sports are available. If it gets to hot you can duck into the water park or perhaps the new ski centre with its huge slops. Dubai's shopping malls also come with a surprising array of side attractions, together with the tax-free shopping and the nice eateries. All top hotels in Dubai have bars and clubs.

Although essentially a city state, there is a bit of driving you can do while in Dubai by car rental. The desert is a short drive away for those with hire cars, and you could even drive over to neighbouring Fujairah for a spot of scuba diving. Jumeirah Road is the most attractive drive in the city.
