Car rental location Altenburg Airport

Location information for Altenburg Airport

Four miles southeast of the German city of Altenburg and only 25 miles from the better known German city of Leipzig is Altenburg Nobitz Airport. The code for this airport is AOC. Altenburg Nobitz is a small airport in Thuringia, Germany with a lot of history. It is used for flights within Germany and greater Europe. It is the second most popular airport in the state of Thuringia and it serves approximately 200,000 passengers per year. It is undergoing efforts to grow that number that include an official change of name to Leipzig-Altenburg Airport.

Ryanair runs flights from Edinburgh, Gerona and London-Stansted to Altenburg Nobitz. Local Altenburg residents use the airport a lot, but there is more demand for air travel from much larger city of Leipzig.

Many air travelers use AOC as a budget way to get to Leipzig. On average, about 15 flights per day depart from the airport. It was up to 18-20 from 2004-2005, but Ryanair has lessened the frequency of many of its flights. So, large crowds and line ups for Baggage claim and budget car rental is not a problem here.

During WWI early fighter planes used the AOC grounds as their base. After the Second World War, the airfield was held for 47 years by the USSR. When communism fell in 1992, Altenburg Nobitz Airport was founded.

Cheap car hire at Altenburg Nobitz Airport (AOC) is a great way to get around Thuringia and Leipzig. The region is easy to understand with clearly marked signs and many highways.
